GeltCalc

GeltCalc

What is GeltCalc?

GeltCalc is a very simple financial calculator for Mac OS X (currently Tiger only, Mac OS 10.4). The main purpose of the project was to create something that I could not find anywhere: a Time Value of Money calculator for my Mac. It seemed that all the cool free calculators out there were either for Scientific, Programming, or just general purpose. There are some pretty good calculators for the Mac that do some loan calculations but nothing really like my good old fashion HP17B.

As a result, my project was created. In it's current state (right now beta) the calculator will only handle simple Time Value of Money calculations (Present Value, Future Value, etc.) as well as typical four function arithmetic calculations (add, subtract, etc.). However, my goal is to have GeltCalc handle Cash Flow calculations as well as some additional math stuff (exponents, etc.). Additionally, the calculator will have a "paper tape" and have standard functionality like copy/paste.

This is my first "real" Cocoa project and I hope it is useful to you. Please feel free to suggest features you'd like to see added or improvements.

GeltCalc and it's source code are free

GeltCalc is being distributed under the GPL. I believe in what is commonly called "DonationWare". If GeltCalc is helpful to you, you can help it's development by donating as little or as much as you like.

Features

Currently the beta of GeltCalc has the standard calculator functions (add, subtract, multipy, and divide) and Time Value of Money calculations (Present Value, Future Value, and Series of Equal Payments). Over the next few releases the plan is to incorporate a "paper tape" readout that the user can access by a toggling out a drawer. The paper tape will have copy and paste functionality. Additionally I need to look at getting two more of the Time Value functions going:

1) Estimate Interest Rate (for example if you input Periods, Present Value, Future Value and want to get what interest rate would accomplish the calculation)

2) Calculating Number of Periods (as above if you enter the other variables and want to get back the Number of Periods required)

Some remaining features (like memory and other math functions) will probably be added later on.

Help

As soon as the beta is up I will have some basic help. However, this is a pretty basic calculator and the goal is to make it very easy to use, so I don't think there will be much need to a major help section.

Beta coming soon

12/1/05

The first beta version should be available for download within the next few days
